Statement from ASRA Club – a call out to community on safe spaces and the erasure of Black Muslim women

ASRA Club, founded by GEM member Sahra-Isha, is “a community space centring Muslim women in sports, wellness and sisterhood”.  Given the group’s foundational aims of creating an inclusive environment of care and community, it is angering and upsetting that they are still faced with the forms of violence and harm described in their statement below.

We note also that whilst the incidents described below involved various forms of Islamophobic, racist and misogynistic abusive language and behaviour, in addition to this, a Black Muslim woman was singled out for particular anti-Black abuse.  And as ASRA point out, this anti-Blackness is sadly not only coming from external abusers – it occurs, consciously or unconsciously, even within Muslim spaces.

With deep sadness, anger and frustration at its need, we share the following statement from ASRA in solidarity with their call out for community support; as they rightly state, these abuses do not occur in a vacuum, and as such there must be a change in and support from the wider community to ensure Muslim women can create safer spaces.  Finally, it is fundamental that any space claiming safety and inclusivity  for Muslims must actively ensure that this always extends to Black Muslim women.

1st page of statement from ASRA. Text reads "To our community, This statement is from our Founder, Sahra-Isha M-J, and the ASRA Team We have always been more than a run club. ASRA Club is built on three values, being Intention Led, Community Inclusive and embodying Isaan (striving for excellence in all we do internally and externally). We are a space that celebrates the everyday runner beyond races, and competitions, and at the heart of what we do, we celebrate sisterhood and growth (whatever that looks like for our community). We want to state that we do not tolerate any form of racial, sexist, Islamophobic, anti-Black, ableist abuse or discrimination of otherness within ASRA Club spaces. The Gem Collective Guidelines 2021 states: "Participating in (a) collective space includes committing to doing the work internally to check ourselves, and create space for us to be checked. This, too, is part of finding joy while working with our imperfections." We as a community are made up of sisters from all walks of life and backgrounds. We need to check ourselves when entering spaces that have been created with ALL sisters in mind, specifically Black Muslim women. It is also crucial that as individuals, we are open to being checked when or if you are compromising that space for our sisters. On 1st June 2023, an incident happened during our track session where a white male refused to leave the upstairs open area of the track. This resulted in me, a Black Muslim woman, and two members of the team, a South Asian woman and a North African woman facing Islamophobic, sexist verbal abuse and due to the dynamics in which the conversation went, myself being singled out with racist and anti- Black abuse. This isn't the first time we have experienced this." "ASRA CLUB" logo (words in green) on bottom left of page. Small arrow pointing right on bottom right of page.
2nd page of statement from ASRA. Text reads "Back in Wimbledon, on 30th October 2019, we had an incident where some young men outside of the track started shouting racial, misogynistic, violent and Islamophobic comments at us and started banging on the fences as a way to threaten us and mimicked high pitched screams for around 30 minutes. With no other way to leave, we called the police. However, it took them almost 40 minutes to arrive, leaving us stuck on the track scared to get out. This is why we book the venue privately and lock the gate. We have always wondered what would have happened that day if that gate was open. The reality is, our safety is always at risk. In order to prioritise ourselves and rethink how we move going forward, we have halted: Track Runs; Park Runs; Park Walks and Talks, and Training Programmes until further notice. This is to give time to work as a team on our community guidelines and give space for healing. We ask that you be patient with us. ASRA Club is here for the long run. We have hopes and goals to make sports more accessible for Muslim women and continue to expand the club into different areas that would be beneficial for our community. But in order to ensure that we last, we need time to sit, process and collectively plan. The incident most recently has been a catalyst for a number of emotions and discussions around how anti Blackness and the resulting lack of safety shows up in Muslim spaces and as a result impacts our ASRA community. Safety goes beyond space. Whilst we try to create safe spaces to the best of our abilities (whether that's physical, in conversations or simply for a person), if we don't lead with care in conversations and how we show up for each other, then it results in our sisters feeling unprotected and unsafe. ASRA Club is built on ensuring that running is for every Muslim woman, which means anyone walking into our space, and engaging in our space needs to be reminded of that." 3rd page of statement from ASRA. Text reads "We've been asking ourselves and our community many questions... • How can we show up collectively without silencing or othering each other? . How do we discuss this with our community so that there is a common thread in understanding our values and how we show up in ASRA Club spaces? • How can we ensure that Black Muslim women are not silenced or othered in our spaces by those who, unconsciously or consciously, carry notions that compromise our values? • How can we ensure our values are respected and upheld when new members of the community or brands engage with us? This topic speaks to the wider Muslim Community. There are a lot of patterns of anti-Blackness that go ignored within the industries and spaces led by or within the Muslim community, which impacts spaces like ASRA Club. Unless these issues are being acknowledged and challenged, then the work done by groups like ASRA Club is made harder as certain attitudes, assumptions and behaviours are being normalised which we do not allow in our space. During this time, we have been and will be holding workshops and conversations both internally and externally to realign. This includes calling an emergency meeting with our community on 19th January 2024. Whether you run with us or attend our events, have never been able to join us but are a part of our group chats or follow us, we invite you to attend. If you are a sister and want to support us in this journey, please join us for this meeting. Details will be shared soon." "ASRA CLUB" logo (words in green) on bottom left of page. 4th page of statement from ASRA. Text reads "When we mention safe spaces, we need it to be from small to big and that means we need support in our mission to centre Muslim women in sports, wellness and sisterhood. The reality is that no existing space will ever be safe for us as it was not created or built with us in mind. I have always had a vision of ASRA Club having its own space, but I did not think we would need to consider it so soon. However, our safety comes first. We have tried a track that is enclosed and a track that comes with some form of security and it is not enough. We are now in the process of wanting our own space that is for us and by us, but we need your help. In the meantime, we are looking to hire security for our current space and seek an additional space that is enclosed enough for us to continue our sessions and programmes. We want to urge brands, and partners that work with us or support us to understand that visibility is nothing if our voices are silenced and members (specifically Black Muslim women) are being invisibilized. Therefore, if you are a brand, or individual and want to know how to support us, reach out to us. We are now asking everyone, Muslim-led organisations, running clubs, sports clubs and community space stakeholders to reach out. How can you support us in supporting the community and realising our mission? ASRA Team" "ASRA CLUB" logo (words in green) on bottom left of page. Small arrow pointing right on bottom right of page.
